Each of my pots is hand thrown, painted, and carved in my studio nestled in the green mountains of Marshfield, Vermont.

I opened L. Koehler Pottery in 1989, following my role as a resident potter and instructor of pottery at the Shelburne Craft School and Goddard College. Prior to that, I worked as a studio assistant at the University of Vermont and a potter’s apprentice in Amherst, Massachusetts. I hold a BA in Art History with a focus on Japanese ceramics from the University of Massachusetts.

My pottery has evolved from garden ware to pit-fired forms and now to majolica earthenware. I have learned from indigenous potters in Togo and produced ceramic water filters for safe drinking water in Arusha, Tanzania, and Kampala, Uganda. I am inspired by Mediterranean pottery, the tiles of the Middle East and North Africa, and the simple, elegant brushwork of Japanese ink painting.
